Great Battles of Rome - PS2 Game

The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome is a real-time strategy game from Slitherine that traces Rome's rise from a small village to the age of Augustus, with you commanding the legions in over 100 of its most famous battles. If you enjoy the large-scale ancient warfare of Rome: Total War but want something more accessible that plays comfortably with a PS2 controller, this is a great way into the genre.

Rather than juggling cities and economies, the game keeps you on the battlefield. You choose your army, plan your approach, and lead your squads into combat against everything from Celtic tribes to rival empires. Each squad is treated like a character in an RPG, so you can customise its skills and appearance and watch your favourite units grow as the campaign goes on. If you'd rather focus on the action, you can hand the tactical decisions to the AI and simply enjoy the spectacle.

The History Channel connection adds real flavour. Around 50 minutes of archive footage is blended into the campaign, tied together by narration following the story of Marcus Aurelius, so the whole journey feels like a documentary you get to fight through.

Features:

• 4 Roman campaigns covering more than 100 historic battles
• 10 additional Celtic campaigns played from the barbarian perspective
• Command up to 20 squads at once across more than 20 troop types, including legionaries, archers, cavalry and war elephants
• Customisable squads with upgradeable skills and appearance
• Day and night battles across steppe, forest, desert and coastline, with terrain affecting the fighting
• Scouts and ambushes for added tactical variety
• Three difficulty levels
• 50 minutes of authentic History Channel footage

A great pick for history buffs and strategy fans who love ancient warfare and want a more approachable, cinematic way to command Rome's legions.
