Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is one of the most surprisingly addictive and genre-defying games on PS2, blending the match-three puzzle gameplay of Bejeweled with deep RPG character building in a way that came completely out of nowhere and captured hearts across every platform it touched. GameSpot called it "more than the sum of its parts" - and they were right.

Set in the fantasy kingdom of Bartonia, you play as a young knight investigating a wave of supernatural disturbances threatening the realm. The journey takes you through a surprisingly substantial RPG adventure spanning a full world map, dozens of towns, hundreds of enemies, and a wealth of side quests, item crafting, and city sieging that gives the game an epic sense of scale well beyond what you'd expect from a puzzle title.

Every battle plays out as a match-three duel on a shared board, matching coloured gems to generate mana for spells, gold for purchases, or experience for levelling up. The genius is how RPG depth transforms a familiar puzzle formula into something genuinely strategic - spell management, attribute building, and equipment choices all meaningfully change how each match plays out. When you defeat the same enemy type three times, you can attempt to capture it as a mount or learn its spells, adding an addictive monster-collecting layer on top of everything else. Four distinct character classes each develop differently, and seven upgradeable attributes give you real control over your playstyle across the lengthy campaign.
