Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons - PS5 Game

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons reimagines the iconic beat 'em up franchise with a fresh roguelike twist, delivering a stylish, fast-paced brawler that earned an 86% Very Positive rating on Steam. For fans of classic arcade brawlers, this is a clever modern spin that respects its roots while genuinely trying something new.

Set in a nuclear-ravaged New York during the year 199X, young Billy and Jimmy Lee, alongside familiar allies like Marian and Uncle Matin, set out to clean up a city torn apart by warring criminal gangs. The chibi-style pixel art gives the apocalyptic setting a charming, comic-book feel that nicely offsets the grim premise, and the soundtrack is consistently praised for amping up the energy of every brawl.

The combat is where Gaiden truly shines. A deep, free-flowing combo system rewards juggling enemies into the air, while a unique tag-team mechanic lets you swap between two chosen fighters mid-fight, extending combos and letting your benched character recover health on the sidelines. Each of the game's 24 unlockable characters brings a genuinely distinct playstyle and special move set, from Marian's ranged pistol attacks to Billy and Jimmy's acrobatic Sosetsuken style. Knocking down groups of enemies spawns food to restore your health, adding a satisfying crowd-control element to every encounter.
The roguelike structure adds real replay value - choosing which gang to confront first changes the length and difficulty of subsequent stages, giving each run its own flavour. Local co-op makes every playthrough more fun with a friend by your side.

For beat 'em up fans craving a fresh, combo-driven brawler with genuine style, Double Dragon Gaiden delivers an entertaining and replayable arcade throwback.
