Handball in a prison yard? In the early 1980s, Atari took this abstract concept and turned it into one of the most addictive video games of its time. By moving a paddle from side to side to volley a ball back and forth, the object was to chip away at the wall in front of you one brick at a time. You would eventually progress to thicker, more complex walls, more capricious balls, and shrinking paddles until you finally lost your last rebound.

Now one of the classics of videogaming has been dusted off and spruced up for its debut on the PlayStation. While they've gone above and beyond the call of duty, adding jaw dropping 3D graphics, insanely fun new levels and worlds, and the interactive extras that today's gamers demand, they've also wisely left the heart of the game alone. The basics you remember are all here they've just been expanded upon. For example, your paddle is now sentient and watches the action as you play. The balls that you hit with the paddle have assorted characteristics and react differently on various levels. And the levels themselves range from distant alien planets to ancient Egypt. There are plenty of animated characters and foes that will keep you chuckling between levels. BREAKOUT also features multiplayer action (if you own a Multi Tap) for up to four players, so invite the gang over and get busy having fun.
