With undeniable inspiration from titles such as Destruction Derby and Driver, Rage’s latest offering is basically about taking beautiful classic cars and smashing the pants out of them. Described as a game that runs on pure adrenaline, Crash gives the player the chance to commandeer highly desirable vehicles, leaving behind a trail of mangled metal and broken glass.

With emphasis on a ‘simple yet effective’ concept, the game utilises the technical capabilities of the Xbox to do a great deal more than previously possible in terms of extensive vehicle deformation and multi-player accessibility. The two core features of Crash are the high detail level of the cars themselves and the damage the player is able to unleash on them. With car models totalling 10,000 polygons and over 30 detachable parts, a great many possibilities are available for real-time car wrecking.

The game itself features both Single and Multi-player modes. Career Mode starts the player with three cars and three regions to play in. Various challenges must be completed with success, awarding the unlocking of new areas, challenges and vehicles. Arcade mode allows the player to play in one-off games featuring the cars and levels unlocked in Career Mode.

A key focus has been placed on the design of the multi-player aspect of the game, with up to four players supported and an extensive array of modes available, such as Team Mode, Deathmatch, Multitag, Time Limit and Score Limit. Crash is intended to have as much importance placed on this mode as is placed on the single player modes.

With some impressive mathematics rumbling away under the Xbox’s hood (18 million polygons at 60 Frames per Second), Crash serves as a competent technical demo for Microsoft’s fledgling hardware if nothing else. But as well as showing off the machine’s brute power, it also presents it’s demographic with an entertaining and exciting experience.
