Dark Chronicle is set 100 years after the events of Dark Cloud and follows the exploits of Maximilian, a 13-year-old boy with an amazing ability with mechanical gadgets. Rebelling against his wealthy father's wishes, Max becomes an apprentice at a repair shop in his hometown of Palm Brinks, where he constructs small inventions and machines in his spare time.
His adventure begins when a mysterious female time traveller is introduced into his life. Monica, a 15-year-old master swordswoman with magical powers, arrives in the village of Palm Brinks from the future, for reasons that become clear as the game progresses. Max and Monica embark on an epic quest involving many twists and turns to stop a time-travelling madman intent on world destruction. Together, this odd couple must travel between the present and future, restoring the damage done in both era's.
