Madden NFL 2004 is the 14th instalment of EA's football series, and it's the one most famous for Michael Vick, who graces the cover and plays the game's most explosive quarterback. If you enjoyed NFL 2K3's franchise depth, Madden 2004 answers back with two big new features, Playmaker Control and Owner Mode, and one of the most popular Madden games ever made on the PS2.

Playmaker Control gives you more control over the action before and after the snap. With the right stick you can quickly change plays, adjust routes and alter defensive coverage, so you can react on the fly just like an NFL player. Michael Vick's scrambling and speed made him a handful for defences, and the game is still remembered for it today. Updated playbooks, broadcast-quality effects and new camera angles keep the action looking fresh, and John Madden, Al Michaels and Melissa Stark return with new commentary.

The headline new mode is Owner Mode, part of a deeper Franchise Mode that now includes minicamp. As the owner, you take on the bottom-line responsibilities on top of being GM, coach and player: hiring a full coaching staff, setting ticket and concession prices, and managing your own stadium. It takes Franchise Mode to a level of control that few sports games match, and it's a big part of why this edition is so well remembered.
