Sherlock Holmes: Mystery of the Mummy is the debut title from Ukrainian developer Frogwares - a studio that would go on to become the most celebrated creator of Sherlock Holmes video games in history. This first-person point-and-click adventure set the foundations for everything that followed, placing you directly in the deerstalker and inverness cape of fiction's greatest detective across a mysterious Egyptian-themed case in turn-of-the-century England.

Called upon by a young woman whose uncle - a renowned archaeologist - has vanished without trace, Holmes investigates the sprawling Montcalfe mansion and museum in search of the missing man and a priceless Egyptian mummy. What begins as a simple disappearance quickly unravels into a web of intrigue, robbery, and potential murder. The atmospheric Victorian setting is one of the game's clear highlights, with fully navigable 360-degree horizontal and 180-degree vertical environments that give the mansion a genuine sense of space and discovery as you move from room to room.

Gameplay is classic point-and-click adventure fare - examining objects, collecting and combining items, and solving increasingly challenging puzzles as you gather the evidence needed to crack the case. The difficulty curve progresses in a satisfying fashion, easing you into Holmes's methods before presenting trickier, more demanding puzzles in the game's latter stages. The jazzy period-appropriate musical score adds wonderful atmosphere throughout, and the game's length is generous for its budget origins, giving dedicated mystery fans a substantial adventure to work through.
