The publishers of Grand Theft Auto III are back with another game geared towards a mature audience. But fans of GTA III should note that while State of Emergency contains adult themes and extremely violent gameplay, that's pretty much where the similarities end. Whereas GTA III was about creating a deep experience unlike any other video game, SOE is a throwback to arcade beat-'em-ups like Smash TV and Double Dragon. However, the game takes the genre to a new level with mind-blowing graphics.

In State of Emergency, you play as one of five selectable characters that's going up against the Corporation--a tyrannical group that has the city in an iron grip. The city is in a state of disarray and the citizens are rebelling. Amazingly, up to 250 characters can riot onscreen at once. It's shocking that the developers were able to render so many moving characters while keeping a smooth frame rate. Basic gameplay consists of picking up numerous weapons and objects to cause as much damage as humanly possible.

For the most part, the game is an enjoyable cacophony of senseless violence, but there are some flaws. Although the revolution mode boasts an impressive number of missions, they do get repetitive. In spite of these flaws, the game remains addictive and fun. This game provides an arcadelike experience that's excellent, but in a very different way.

Redline is the Mad Max of action games. Accolade and Action Games have taken the first-person shooter to the next level of interactivity by successfully combining vehicular combat with on-foot warfare. Think of it as a combination of Interstate `76, Carmageddon, and Quake.

Players can fight their enemies on foot with a variety of weapons, or hop into an empty Battle Wheels rig and start blowing things up with the vehicle's built in weapons. Gameplay takes place in huge outdoor levels which contain a variety of buildings and structures which will need to be explored on foot. The levels are in a "modular" format similar to Dark Forces or Aliens Versus Predator, in that instead of going from one level to the next, players are able to select any previous level from the new game menu. Unlike those games however, Redline has an ingame save feature which is good.

There are a total of twelve missions in the single player game which will take the player to locations such as Stadium City, Templar Strongholds, Battewheels combat tournaments and even Area 51.

Take No Prisoners is a top-down, semi-3D shooter that takes an interesting spin on the genre. Action, adventure and strategy all have their place in this game, rolled up inside a cool, post-apocalyptic plot.

You play Slade, a mercenary recruited by The Man to retrieve a special crystal from a mysterious dome, deep in the irradiated hell-hole of San Antonio, Texas. The story progresses, System Shock style, as you collect data files from computers and dead enemies, and place them in a Personal Data Device.

There are over 20 areas in the game, which can be explored on foot or using ATVs, hovercrafts, or sewer boats, in a largely non-linear fashion. The enemies vary, from obsessed cultists wielding laser swords to mechanical warriors who use shoulder-mounted lasers. These elements should provide many hours of enjoyable gameplay, and set the game apart from a top-down Duke Nukem clone.

This game is a successful, drop-dead gorgeous hybrid of real-time strategy, action, and lush sci-fi sim. The story takes you planet-hopping in pursuit of an alien culture and the destruction of The Other Side. The typical level requires establishing and defending a base, churning out a few offensive units (the game wisely limits them to ten), and kicking down an enemy base. A simple and very intuitive menu system is used to build and direct units from within the vehicle of your choice--you can use your mouse to select an onscreen object, or you can use number keys one through nine to order units you can't see to attack, defend objects, or to respond to a number of other commands.

The history you knew is a lie. There was no Space Race.

The real story is simple... In 1950's, American and Soviet scientists have discovered alien bio-metal that arrived via meteorites. In the year 2445, a race of hostile aquatic aliens arrives on Earth. In order to effectively fight the aliens, the fictional Earth Ocean Alliance develops the "Hydras", one-man submarine fighter craft.

The player takes on the role of the last remaining fighter pilot. The objective is to travel through the alien-infested seas and fend off the targets long enough to complete the missions.

The game is split up into a number of stages, taking place in various locations, the ultimate aim being to make your way through to the end of that level in once piece. There are a lot of cut-scenes that further the story.
