Noctropolis is a puzzle-solving adventure game, with game mechanics similar to Sierra and LucasArts titles belonging to the same genre. Controlling Peter, the player has to interact with characters and objects, manipulate inventory items, solve puzzles and overcome the obstacles the main character will have to face to advance the story. The game has a verb-based menu interface that appears if the player right-clicks on the screen. It features live actors filmed over digitized graphics; many conversations and cutscenes are displayed as short movies shown inside a smaller screen.

Peter Grey is a lonely bookstore owner who also happens to be a huge fan of the "Darksheer" comic book series. Darksheer is a Batman-esque superhero: one who doesn't have any actual superpowers, triumphing over evil thanks to his inventiveness and courage. He is the sworn protector of Noctropolis, a city where it's always night time because of a permanent ash cloud that hangs over it, the result of a volcanic environmental catastrophe which occurred decades before.

One night, as Peter is leafing through the newest issue of "Darksheer" to hit the stands, a courier brings him a package which eventually transports him into the city of Noctropolis, where he has to take the role of Darksheer himself. Coincidentally enough, his arrival as Darksheer occurs at the same time as five of the superhero's deadliest arch-villains decide to gang up on him after they are mysteriously released from incarceration. It's up to the unlikely hero to find out who released the criminals, while simultaneously trying to keep them from wreaking havoc across the city of Noctropolis - and maybe, in the process, find a way back to the real world.

Following Garret's previous adventures in the first game, the repercussions of his actions have changed the political landscape. The Hammerite religion has crumbled and a new leader named Karras has risen up to convert many of these fanatics over to the mysterious Order of Mechanists. Meanwhile, a new Sheriff has arrived in town and has been effective at cleaning up crime. Maybe a little too effective. This is bad news for Garrett, whose profession of master thief puts him on the wrong side of the law. As the risk increases however, so too does the amount of treasure available to a skilled thief.

Thief 2 keeps much of the same gameplay and abilities from the original Thief: The Dark Project but offers a few new toys. Among them are scouting orbs; which can be thrown to see around corners and flash mines. The heart of the gameplay is still stealth, made up of Garrett's ability to stay quiet, stay hidden and keep signs of trouble out of anyone's view. Garrett's main weapons are his sword, his blackjack and an assortment of arrows, each with a special power. Each level features a variety of objectives as well as several items which don't belong to you, but are nonetheless valuable and can be stolen.

Every level is wonderfully depicted with acute detail. The levels have a realistic gritty feel to them. But what are pretty environments if you can't interact with them? Conrad can talk to people, use terminals, switches, elevators, as well as perform more intricate tasks.
An extensive inventory also plays an important role in the game. Puzzles are present in every task you must accomplish in the game. The puzzles can be difficult but are logical and a joy to solve especially since you begin to identify with Conrad and his situation.

Flashback: The Quest for Identity proves that you don't need the latest hardware to have a fun and memorable time.
