Time Commando places you in the future, or is it the past? Time flows differently for you in this game after arriving for your night shift at the Historical Tactical Center, something unthinkable happens. An infiltrator infects the super computer with a virus, which sets off a chain reaction no one thought possible. A rupture in time engulfs the super computer and all who were unlucky enough to be manning the consoles. Playing your favourite computer game you are interrupted by the alarm, signalling a major disaster. Immediately you grab your gear and run to the main computer room. Opening the door you are blinded by the light of the rupture, a pulsating half sphere of energy encapsulating the main computer. Walking closer you touch the rupture and watch it's surface ripple like water, only to be pulled inside!

The popular series continues as Sonic 3D Blast puts Sonic, everyones favorite blue hedgehog with an attitude, in the three dimensional environment of Flicky Island, home of the Flickies, little birdies that contain the secret of the hidden Chaos Emeralds. Unfortunately, Sonic's arch enemy Dr. Robotnik, mad scientist and despicable miscreant, learned of the emeralds first. Using his robot creatures to capture the birds and set up intruder defenses all over the island, he plans to steal the Chaos Emeralds and use them to rule the world.

As Sonic the Hedgehog, you must explore the dangerous Flicky Island, gather up all the captured Flickies, and transfer them to the dimension rings, sending them back to the Flicky dimension. The once tranquil island is now an obstacle course of spike traps, frozen paths, lava beds, shock weapons, and robots. To break open a robot containing a Flicky, you must Spin Dash or jump on the metal creature. After setting the bird free, if you run past it, it will follow you wherever you go. Be careful, though: if you get hit by an enemy, the bird flies free. When you have transported all of the Flickies into dimensional rings, you move onto the next level.

Sonic 3D was the last Sonic title released for the Mega Drive, the only platforming presence of the blue blur in the Sega Saturn and one of the rare presences in Personal Computers. The title, considering the era it was released, is somewhat misleading, as instead of full blown 3D graphics it uses an isometric view where Sonic can move not only forwards and backwards, but also left and right.
