Dead to Rights is a gritty, story-driven third-person shooter that mixes slow-motion gunplay with Hong Kong-style action. If you enjoyed the bullet-time dives of Max Payne or the tense action of Syphon Filter, this has that same cinematic feel, with a K-9 partner added to the mix.

You play as Jack Slate, a Grant City cop who finds himself framed for murder and sets out through a series of gritty urban locations to uncover the people responsible. The story unfolds across around twenty levels, and the real star of the show is Jack's loyal dog, Shadow, who can attack enemies and fetch their weapons for you. In some sections you even get to take control of Shadow yourself. An adrenaline meter lets Jack throw himself into slow-motion dives and evasive moves, and the aiming is straightforward, with the closest enemy locked on when you hold the button.

Up close, Jack is a martial arts expert who can disarm his enemies, snatching their weapons with a dramatic flourish, and he can grab an enemy to use as a human shield. Wall-hugging lets you spin around and take down foes, mini-games break up the action every few levels, and boss fights put your moves to the test. The mix of shooting, melee, stunts and a faithful canine sidekick gives the game a personality all its own.
